SEASONAL GARDEN CREW
4 positions available
(1 permanent, year round position for the right candidate)
We are currently looking to hire four great folks for our seasonal crew! These positions will run approximately April through mid November. We are looking ideally for 2 full and 2 part time persons. Please indicate in your application email if you are looking for full time or part time. Read the full job descriptions and scroll below to see instructions on how to apply. Thank you!
SEASONAL GARDEN CREW
Description
As a member of our seasonal crew, you will be an integral part of our farm team during the height of the growing season. The majority of your work over the season will be harvesting veggies! This includes picking, washing & packing a wide range of seasonal vegetables every week. We have high standards for quality, cleanliness & uniformity in our veggies and you will be critical help in maintaining those. We work fast, use sharp knives, and pick a lot of veggies in a day. It’s fun and satisfying work but also a skill that you will learn over time.
In addition to harvest, you will help out with field work on the farm (things like planting, weeding, and crop maintenance). Things are generally a bit heavier on field work in early/late season, and focused mostly on harvest in the middle.
Duties include:
Harvest. We harvest 3-4 days a week depending on the season. It is a large percentage of the work on our farm & you will spend a lot of time picking, washing, and packing beautiful veggies for sale! That will include harvest for all of our outlets including our weekly Online Market, CSA boxes, and once-weekly wholesale deliveries. Harvest includes all of the associated tasks: wash station cleaning & prep, harvesting of vegetables, washing & packing vegetables, and clean up at the end of the day.
Field work. In addition to harvest, you will be involved in the wide range of other farming tasks that happen week to week. This will include primarily planting, crop maintenance (trellising, weeding etc), and other field chores. Typically, we have one focused day of field work per week, and the rest are more mixed/focused on harvest & sales.
Other duties. There are some regular chores we will do weekly, including filling seed trays, washing totes and bins, and helping support the Livestock Crew with animal husbandry associated tasks.
Qualifications:
While not required, farming experience or experience with physical labor, competitive athletics, or in a restaurant kitchen will be very applicable and will be an asset to this position. Farming is physical work and requires the ability to repeatedly bend and lift 50# safely off the ground. The nature of harvesting vegetables means there is a lot of bending and kneeling to reach crops, and lots of moving & carrying heavy totes and harvest bags. We pick every week to fulfill our obligations to our CSA clients and our online market & wholesale customers. We work in all weathers, and a willingness to do that and maintain a positive attitude while doing it is crucial!
Attention to detail, ability to take direction, and asking good questions are required qualities for this position. Farm work is a skill and it will take time to master each task; being someone who enjoys constantly learning new skills and achieving mastery in them will get you far in farming! There is a lot of precision and repetition in the work, and you need to be good with that and able to stay focused and engaged while doing one task for a period of time.
A familiarity with vegetables and how they are presented for sale is very helpful (we will of course train you on this as well). Experience with customer service in a high-pressure environment (restaurant, busy café etc.) is also very useful and applicable.
An overall ability to focus and work with a sense of urgency is key as our lists are long and the days are short. Bring your hustle, focus & enthusiasm with you!
You must have reliable transportation to and from the farm.
If you have zero farm related work experience, we encourage you to apply as an intern.
